Ancona to Mantova, Italy (This is out of date order as we were here before the lakes)

We left the ferry in the usual slightly chaotic way, dodging lorries and looking around for the way out. No customs at all as we disembark.

Italy is quite a mountainous country, and the towns and cities are squashed on the eastern seaward coast. The main roads and railway follow this coast. So when we booked what looked like a small hotel down the coast from Ancona and imagined ourselves walking along a beach similar to those in Corfu we could not have been more wrong. The traffic was simply frightening and we travelled along this main road for several km until we got to a suburb of low-rise apartments busy roads and the hotel Europa that we had booked. A bit like a holiday Inn. We would have been better finding somewhere in the town centre, but we were a bit tired (doing nothing on ferries makes me incredibly lethargic) so we just accepted the banality of the surroundings and hunkered down for the night. No photos as there was nothing that we really wanted to remember. Now on train along the Adriatic coast. Narrow coastal beach strip with lots of modern buildings and hotels. I think central Italy is more appealing. Next stop Mantova. asked known as Mantua.
Air B&B Mantova.  Very lovely ancient building at the heart of the town.
From this courtyard up 4 long flights of winding stairs.

Mantova was a beautiful clean city/town, I'm not sure with many grand Palazzos and later Neo Classical churches.

It is surrounded by walls and water.

Mantova
Lovely shops of all kinds

Palazzo in Mantova a place that flourished under the Gonzaga family in the 14th century
